Green tea and black tea come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. The difference is handling. What the pairing actually does
Researchers have tested that pairing directly. In controlled trials, a dose of L-theanine taken with caffeine improved the speed and accuracy of attention-switching tasks and left people less distracted by irrelevant information than a placebo, effects that were clearest for the combination rather than either compound by itself. One study using amounts close to a strong cup of tea, roughly ninety milligrams of L-theanine with forty of caffeine, sharpened attention on a switching task while leaving self-reported alertness unchanged.
Two honest caveats belong here. The effects are modest and measured over minutes, not evidence of lasting cognitive gain. And a recent review noted that while the alpha-wave finding is consistent, many of the broader claims made for L-theanine still run ahead of the evidence. What the research supports is a real, gentle shift in attention, not a smart-drug transformation.
The fat it will not burn
Green tea's reputation as a fat burner rests on thermogenesis, the small rise in energy the body spends after certain compounds. A meta-analysis of short controlled studies found that a catechin and caffeine mixture raised twenty-four-hour energy expenditure by around five percent and lifted fat oxidation by roughly sixteen percent, with the fat-oxidation effect showing up only when caffeine came along. Those are real but small numbers, and they describe metabolism inside a lab, not pounds on a scale.
When the question is actual weight, the picture shrinks further. The most complete accounting, a Cochrane review pooling many trials, found that green tea preparations produced a weight change that was very small and not statistically significant, the kind of difference unlikely to matter in daily life. Tellingly, the results split by region: studies run outside Japan averaged almost no loss, while some Japanese studies showed more, a spread that points to differences in study design and habit rather than a dependable fat-burning switch.

The longevity headlines, read honestly
The other headline is that tea drinkers live longer. Large Japanese cohort studies do find this pattern. In one study following more than forty thousand adults, higher green tea consumption was associated with lower death rates from all causes and from cardiovascular disease, with the strongest link seen for stroke. A later pooling of eight Japanese cohorts, more than three hundred thousand people in all, saw the same inverse association.
The word carrying the weight is associated. These are observational studies, which can show that two things travel together but cannot prove that one causes the other. People who drink a lot of green tea may also eat, move, or smoke differently, and researchers adjust for what they can measure and no more. The associations are consistent and worth respecting, yet they are a reason for interest, not a promise printed on the box.
The honest read
So how much, and in what form? For most people the answer is reassuring. The regulators who examined green tea's safety concluded that catechins from ordinary brewed tea and similar drinks are generally safe, even for people who drink a good deal of it.
The caution sits with concentrated green tea extracts, not the cup. Reviewing supplement studies, those same regulators linked doses of EGCG at or above eight hundred milligrams a day, the range found in some slimming and antioxidant capsules, to early signs of liver strain in a small share of users, enough that such products now carry a warning. The reactions appear to be idiosyncratic, hard to predict, and more likely when an extract is taken on an empty stomach in one large dose rather than sipped as tea across a day.
